Skyla, an Australian Shepherd, seems convinced the family’s newest little human should already know how to play fetch. But the baby is still far too young to understand the rules, leaving Skyla to fetch the toy herself and patiently wait for her tiny playmate to catch on.
Dog tries to play fetch with baby and won’t accept that her tiny friend isn’t ready
A funny video shared by the family captures the determined Australian Retriever repeatedly bringing her green ball over to the baby, seemingly waiting for someone to throw it. The baby sits in a seat as Skyla stands nearby with the toy in her mouth, looking genuinely puzzled about why her new playmate is not joining in.
When the baby does not throw the ball, the dog keeps returning with it. At one point, Skyla brings the ball right up to the baby’s face, almost as if she is demonstrating exactly what she wants. Skyla eventually moves even closer, standing beside the baby with the ball still firmly in her mouth. The playful interaction makes it seem like the dog has already picked the baby as her new fetch partner, whether the little one is ready or not.
The video perfectly sums up Skyla’s determination with the text: “POV: your Aussie refuses to accept that baby can’t play fetch yet.” By the end, the baby appears to have the ball nearby, prompting another playful question from the family: “Success?”
The family regularly shares special moments with their Australian Shepherds on Instagram through @lunatheaussiex. The profile introduces Luna, Lando, Rosie, and Skyla, describing them as Australian Shepherds.
The sweet interaction reminded viewers of their own dogs trying to involve babies in play. “Hahaha my Aussies did this to my nephews/nieces too!” one user wrote. Another shared, “My dog left his ball on the bassinet the first week she was home.” “So adorable,” another viewer commented.
One person joked about the Australian Shepherd’s instincts, writing, “If you can’t fetch, I’ll try herding you.” Another viewer added, “Wait till they do start throwing it.”
