According to the video of the shelter dog, Chumly (A5785873) is a one-year-old, 65-pound German Shepherd who arrived at Downey Animal Care Center after his owners surrendered him on June 27, 2026, citing landlord issues. The video explains that Chumly’s family once called him the “perfect cuddler,” but they are no longer there to comfort him during what rescuers describe as his darkest moments.
On-screen text reads, “His family called him the perfect cuddler. But they won’t be there to hold his paw in his darkest hour.” The video goes on to say Chumly is scheduled to be euthanized for space and could lose his life at any moment unless someone steps forward to foster, adopt, or rescue him.
The shelter described Chumly as a cautious dog, but not an aggressive one. Staff said he walked out of his kennel on his own and pulled moderately on the leash before entering the play yard. Once outside, Chumly quietly explored the area, sniffed around, and eventually lay down near the edge of the yard. He stayed calm around the other dogs but showed little interest in playing or interacting with them.
California Shelter Pets stressed that Chumly’s final notice has already expired, meaning he is past the deadline and could be euthanized at any time. The organization urged anyone able to foster, adopt, or rescue him to act immediately.
