Thompson the puppy is only 12 weeks old, but he has already learned a hard truth about getting out of jail in this hilarious Instagram video from @thompsonthebernese. A moment in “jail” taught the Bernese Mountain Dog that sometimes the exit is right there, and you still won’t see it until you have wasted a good four hours trying to figure it out and staring dramatically into the distance.
Puppy doesn’t quite know how to free himself from ‘jail’
In the Instagram video, the tiny Bernese puppy appears to be “stuck in jail,” aka a metal playpen. The twist is that it has an opening he could absolutely walk around. Still, he cannot.
The video opens with Thompson sitting behind the gate like a little inmate, looking confused but also weirdly calm. Behind the camera, his mom laughs softly as she tries to help him solve the world’s easiest puzzle. She points and gently coaches, “Thompson, go around,” tracing the route with her finger. But Thompson doesn’t move an inch.
Instead, the pup just watches his mom through the bars like she is the one who needs help. The on-screen text captures this perfectly, reading, “What are you doing crazy lady.” This is followed by “HOW DID YOU DO THAT” as she traces the route to get out of the “jail.” And when she calls, “Come here,” Thompson still refuses to budge, committed to the bit.
Then the video jokes that Thompson finally looks back “4 hours later” and thinks, “Oh wait what’s this” as he discovers the open side of the pen — and so, he steps out like he is returning from a long journey. Meanwhile, the on-screen text speaks on his behalf: “Hiiiii mom I’m back.”
The caption is honest in saying, “I’m more book smart than street smart.” And honestly, that checks out. Thompson may not be street smart yet, but he is already a pro at making a jailbreak feel like a full sitcom episode.
